How To Find Shorts That Fit And Look Good

Shorts come in many lengths and styles these days, which makes it much easier to find a pair that look great. And they can be quite stylish if you follow these rules for how to find shorts that fit and look good.

  1. The first style rule is that your shorts should always, always, always be longer than then your shirt, otherwise it looks as if you are not wearing a bottom! A three-inch inseam is the minimum you should look for. A five-inch inseam is a good mid-thigh length to look for.
  2. I see so many women of all ages who wear shorts that are too small. You should be able to fit two fingers in the waistband. And, unless they are denim and made to hug your bottom, no one should see the exact curve of your cheeks (not the ones on your face, the other ones).
  3. If you have large thighs, bermuda shorts that come just above the knee are a great option. If you are not thrilled with your knees, you can opt for clam diggers that end just below the knee. Otherwise, if you are happy with your legs, a pair that come mid-thigh are your best bet. They can be dressed up with a cute T-shirt, chunky jewelry and wedge shoes (and even a white blazer for dinner out) or dressed down for a day at the beach with a tank top and flat sandals.

Some other tips…

  • The less pockets to add bulk to your frame, the better. Avoid patch pockets on the front of shorts and pockets on the thighs on cargo shorts.
  • Pleated shorts also add bulk to your frame. Stay with flat-front shorts; they never go out of style.
  • Color, any color, is on-trend this season, so have fun with it by mixing different tones together or contrasting it with a neutral. Don’t forget about all the cute patterned shorts out there right now!
  • I have very pale skin, so I’ll put some self-tanner on my legs before I wear shorts.
  • Most women, if not all, want their legs to look longer. However, wearing sneakers with shorts will make your legs look shorter as will gladiator sandals that have ankle straps. Flip-flops or ballet flats or any other shoes that leave the top of your foot and ankle uncovered will make your legs look longer.
