The freezing cold weather outside and dry heat inside make skin sooo dry and parched in winter. I have some tried-and-true winter skincare tips for making sure you look your best – even at -45 degrees!
- Before you go out, slather some thick cream on your hands and pull on a pair of cheap gloves (I buy 5 or 6 pairs at Old Navy or Target or H & M every winter. They’re only about $3 each). By the time you arrive at your destination, the cream will be absorbed and your hands will be silky soft. When the gloves start getting yucky, throw them out and use a new pair.
- If your feet are in really bad shape, slather some thick cream on, stick each foot in a plastic vegetable bag (the kind you get at the supermarket or you can use cling wrap) and put socks over them. You can do this overnight or for a few hours while watching TV. The plastic bag softens your feet and helps the cream absorb. I use the L’Occitane cream below on both my hands and my feet. It’s very rich and moisturizing.
L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream. $28
- Cheeks and lips can get chapped in the winter, but you can keep them moisturized and give them a hint of shine at the same time by using Smith’s Rosebud Salve. It’s a cult favorite and can be used on almost any spot that is dry or rough.
- If your hair looks flat after wearing a hat (like mine does), put your hair in a high ponytail before you put your hat on. When you get to your destination, take out the ponytail, shake your hair, and you will have body to spare!
- And, if your hair gets static-ey in the winter (like mine does), carry a dryer sheet with you (I keep mine in a baggie in my cosmetics bag). It does wonders for static cling on hair!
Bounce Dryer Sheets. $5.99
- Dry cuticles are another wintertime problem. I use Vaseline Lip Therapy in a tube on my cuticles to soften and heal them.
Vaseline Lip Therapy. $1.49
Scents dissipate faster on dry winter skin. I use a body lotion in the same scent as my perfume. I like Hadrien by Annick Goutal a lot. It’s fresh and citrusy smelling. The matching body lotion is very emollient and creamy. Love it!
Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien Body Lotion. $70 for 5 oz.
If you have an event to go to this winter and you don’t want to look like a ghost, L’Oreal makes a great instant tanner. It’s natural looking and streak-free!
L’Oreal Paris Sublime Self Tanning Lotion. $9.99
If you have any winter skincare tips, I’d love to hear them!

Love all your tips. I’ll have to try the dryer sheet tip, my hair is VERY static in the winter, as well. The Rosebud salve is new to me, looking forward to trying that, too! My number one tip, sleep with a humidifier. Keeps my face and lips feeling moist and I find my moisturizer is absorbed better.
Glad you liked my tips Vittoria, and thanks for yours!
I was told that you are better off using Crisco on your face and hands in a pinch rather than using creams with harsh ingredients in them. My hands were so red and chapped a few weeks ago that they felt like there were on fire! I put Crisco on them and it did bring relief until I got in to see my Dermatologist. Also, I was told that “A&D Ointment” and/or “Vaseline” is also good to put on at night for severely chapped hands, and then you can put on “cotton” gloves over them.
A couple of times when I came in from the cold and my face was red and dry, I also put Crisco on and it actually felt good on my skin!
Thanks for your tips Carol! I’ve heard about Crisco as well, but now I need to try it!
